Welcome. Let me introduce myself.
Kimesha “Sunshine” Alvarado
“I believe every community has stories worth preserving and that every generation has a responsibility to leave a clearer historical record than it inherited.”
As a mother, writer, researcher, military veteran, and civic advocate, I am passionate about preserving the history, culture, and future of Alabama’s Black Belt. My work explores public policy, government accountability, leadership, faith, and the people whose stories have shaped our communities but are too often overlooked.
I proudly served twelve years in the United States military through the U.S. Navy and Air National Guard. Those experiences instilled in me the values of discipline, service, and leadership that continue to guide my work today. I hold a Master of Science in Public Administration with a concentration in Leadership, Organization, and Development, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems, and an Associate of Science in Logistics.
I enjoy asking thoughtful questions, researching beyond the headlines, and connecting today’s issues to the lessons of history. I believe history should do more than preserve the past—it should help us build stronger communities, better leaders, and a more informed future.
Whether I’m writing about local history, public policy, civic engagement, or community leadership, my goal remains the same: to educate, inspire, preserve stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and encourage others to become active participants in shaping the future.
I’m a boy mom, and my sons are my most valuable accomplishment in life.
Welcome—and thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I hope my work informs, challenges, and inspires you.
